How to identify a flea problem

Identifying a flea problem in your home can be frustrating, especially because these tiny pests are incredibly elusive and surprisingly fast.

One of the most common and distressing signs is the sudden appearance of small, itchy red bites—usually on your lower legs, ankles, or around your waistline.

These bites are often intensely irritating, may appear in clusters, and tend to become worse at night or after sitting on carpets or furniture.

You may also notice your pets scratching, biting, or grooming themselves excessively and anxiously.

Fleas love to hide in the thick, warm fur of cats and dogs, and you might spot tiny black specks (known as flea dirt) on their skin, especially around the neck, tail base, and belly.

This flea dirt, when placed on a damp paper towel, will turn rusty red, revealing it’s actually digested blood—a disturbing but reliable sign of an infestation.

If you look very closely, particularly with a flashlight or comb, you might even see small, fast-moving brown insects jumping through the fur or on your carpets and soft furnishings.

Fleas are expert hiders and prefer to dwell in dark, undisturbed areas like pet bedding, under furniture, or along skirting boards.

A sudden increase in scratching, unusual skin reactions, or even spotting fleas hopping around your home are all urgent red flags that you likely have a growing infestation.

Don’t ignore the early signs—fleas multiply incredibly quickly, and an untreated problem can spiral out of control in just a few short weeks.
